Spring Ball for Keaton&Cal

Callahan &Co continued to play in the Spring season. They had several games in April and May. I went to all I could (the close ones) and got video, but didn't get around to making the highlight reels for most of them. Here's one ...

Keaton had broken his wrist in the early spring (playing basketball in gym class at school). He'd been asked to be on the all-star team for state, reunited with all his best buds, and was crushed when he wasn't able to play. The cast came off right as the Spring season started up. He got bumped to the B team, which was disappointing (and a lot harder to find carpools for game conflicts) but he made the best of it ... even though they got pretty trounced! They did the Spring Fling (AAU, games all over) and the Spring Slam (at CHHS).

Keaton didn't even want me to video his games ... so I didn't. Mostly. I had my camera in my purse one game where he did SO awesome, I felt bad I hadn't been filming I brought the video camera to another game, and again, Keaton did great, so he was grudgingly pleased to have it captured on film 

We were both quite relieved when the Spring season was over though.

I'd discovered audiobooks during this time, so me with  my headphones on was a common sight at all the games. I could video, watch, and listen to my book all at the same time! Talk about multi-tasking, right? We even got Maga and Colton out to come watch (Keaton was there for many of Cal's games).

Spring has sprung and now is done ... on to Summer!

Colton - Spring Wolves

Spring Season is here! We lost one player from our winter team (Max rejoined his former team "The Scorpions" who we will play against) and so we added Issac. That's right. ANOTHER Issac. We already had two on the team ... now we have three! With 10 players, Coach Farmer generally plays the boys in sets of five. Colton, Gage, Isiah, Kiony, Gordon are one set, and the other is the Issacs and Collins (we have two Collins too!). 

Practices are still Friday nights, 6:30-8:30 at SLCC. Again, a HUGE thanks to the Berlin family for letting Colton catch rides! We are playing in two spring leagues, a Saturday Superleague  with Gene Fullmer (schedule/stats), and a Tuesday one with Murray Parks and Rec (schedule/stats).

After the regular season, there were playoffs ... we played the Grizzlies again, and then ... a rematch against Mayhem. We'd already played them twice (games 3&4) ... lost one, won one. The boys really wanted to win the championship, but it wasn't meant to be. Mayhem came out strong, and our boys could NOT get a shot to drop the entire first quarter. Finally, got some baskets and got close enough to make the end exciting, but couldn't clinch it.

Sometimes I think we need to take a picture BEFORE the final game (we can always take another "#1" one after if they win) ... the boys, especially Colton, were having a bit of a hard time smiling after the loss. On to Summer at Dimple Dell!

Colton - Junior Jazz Tournament

Colton's team had played in the regular Junior Jazz season. At the end, there is a tournament for teams who would like to play a bit more. Instead of just going against the teams in your immediate area, you play teams from various rec centers. It's generally a bit more competitive, as the winning teams, those who have had a good season, are usually the ones that decide to move forward. 

We were playing in the 4th grade division (half the team was in 3rd grade) and when the schedule came out, many of the games were downtown. I don't drive downtown. I was able to catch rides with team members and hit almost all of the games. Surprisingly, several of them were easy wins. We did have a few challenges, and ended up in the championships. That was a close game! The rules did NOT allow a press at all ... and we were able to use that to clinch the win (although I can see why they do allow a press in the final moments, because it did consist of our boys running the clock down, and it did lack excitement ... although I'm sure any other coach in the situation would have done the same). The boys were pretty happy with their championship t-shirts! Here's highlights from the tournament games ...

Colton - 4th Grade Grizzlies

After our Fall League experience (playing in the rec 3rd/4th division and dominating every game) we decided to try the boys in a superleague. 4th grade division, as Colton and a few of the other boys were 4th graders (the rest were in 3rd, with Austin still in 2nd). Coach decided on the Murray Topflight League.

The games were Thursday nights ... often late (8:00 or 9:00 on a school night!) and this league had divisions (upper/lower) and yikes! This was the SUPERleague! These teams were good! And the competitiveness was high. Waiting for our first game, a yelling match ensued between coaches/refs and even parents until the game was called and people were ejected. It was a little intimidating.

Only one win in the regular season (right in the middle, vs Murray). In the playoffs, we faced Murray again (and won again) and advanced. Unfortunately, the next playoff game conflicted with our Junior Jazz Tournament game. Our boys were winning, when five of them had to take off to the other game, leaving just four players to attempt to hold the score (they weren't able to). So that was the end of the Murray league.

Colton - Winter Wolves

Colton reconnected with his coach and several teammates from his Spring and Summer seasons, and rejoined them for a Superleague team this Winter. They played in two different leagues. The Salt Lake Superleague which played on Wednesday evenings, and then in the Dimple Dell League on Saturdays. They practiced a couple of hours on Friday nights at Salt Lake Community College. 

It was a good season.
We were pretty much in the middle of the pack in both leagues. 

We won some and lost some. 

I didn't get video of all the games ... with other boys in basketball, there were some conflicts, and I had to send Colton with teammates a few times (thank you SO much to Collin's family for helping me out with carpools to games and practices). Here are links to the videos I did get ...

Callahan - JV

Another year, another tryout, and another team. Callahan has moved on up to the JV team at Copper Hills High School. He's SO excited to get playing again, and I love watching him play. So far they have had some pre-season play, the Elite8 Tournament, and a tournament in Orlando, Florida (in which they took first place!) It's almost time for the real season to start up ...

As the kids aren't really using FB anymore themselves, I also set up "Basketball Mom" accounts for Instagram and Twitter ... of course, now they are using SnapChat, right?  I'll be making muvees of every game I get to, and adding them to the YouTube Playlist Callahan-JV and posting links to the aforementioned social media.

Colton - Basketball Boy

Colton stayed busy with basketball year-round in 2015. Spring/Summer/Fall ... and now the actual basketball season! The 4th grade team he had played with in the Fall is doing the Murray Top Flight league. None of the other Blackham boys have tried this league before, so it will be a new one for the family. We also reconnected with his coach from Spring/Summer who is playing in a couple 5th grade superleagues for Winter. They had a spot on the team, so we re-joined them as well. So Colton is super busy with two practices and three games every week! He loves it!

There have been some game conflicts (usually overlapping with Keaton) but I've hit every game I can, and Colton's friend Collin is available to give rides when I can't. While I generally make a muvee of each game for the older boys, sometimes I do need to combine a few to get enough highlights here. Here's the link to the first five games of Colton's 5th grade league.

After Christmas, the boys received brand new uniforms ... and they look pretty snazzy. Watch for them in upcoming muvees and clips.  The Murray (4th) grade league just started up in January, so I'll be making muvess of those games too.  If you want timely updates, check out my BasketballMom social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) where I  update asap.

Cooper Junior Jazz (6th Grade)

While Cooper loves playing basketball, and is an absolute fan of the NBA, he hasn't wanted to play on an organized team for a couple of years. Even just recreational ball was a little too much. I missed watching him play. He surprised me this season by saying he did want to be on a Junior Jazz team with his friends from school. I was surprised, but thrilled!

I'm so grateful to this group of friends, these basketball buddies from school that got Cooper-Man playing again! After a tough game though, Cooper did get a little intimidated and skipped the rest of the season. Glad I got this picture (he wasn't there for the official team photo either).

Keaton - West Hills 9th Grade Team

During this 2015-2016 season, Keaton is playing on the West Hills Middle School team. They play in the district league on Saturdays, against the other middle schools in the Jordan District. To get a little more playing time in, they are also on a trimmed team playing Thursdays in the Salt Lake Superleague. It keeps us busy! Happily, practices are generally right after school, so that helps out, saving extra trips. 

I don't know that I'll catch every game (with three other boys in basketball, there are bound to be some conflicts) but those I do, I'll try to video and make a muvee of the highlights. I'll be posting to my "Basketball" Facebook page (Twitter & Instagram too). Keaton got sick for one of the last Saturdays in the tournament. Unfortunately it was a double header that day, so he missed two games. The team won one, lost the other, which eliminated them. It always feels like an "unfinished" season when you miss the last game!

The boys finished up with an end of season party.

Colton - Fall 2015

Fall Basketball ... after the summer season, Colton's coach and some of the kids were moving up to the 5th/6th grade level. They invited Colton to come play with them, but I was a little concerned about them going against a team of all 6th graders (I remember Callahan's crew completely dominating that league one season). At the high school, there were the tryouts for the Bantam leagues, but there just wasn't much interest in the 3rd or 4th grade level. With both grades combined they couldn't even put together a team. After spreading the word and adding a couple more kids, there were eight players, and three dad coaches. There was some debate about whether to try a superleague, but as it was the first time the boys were playing together, it was decided to join the Gene Fullmer 3rd/4th rec league. Practices were Tuesday nights. Cooper often came and shot around some, and I jogged the track while I waited.

We almost wished we had gone the superleague route, as the boys won every game with ease. At times the coach had to get creative in ways to hold the boys back (no dribbling-only passing, defense only with the legs-no arms). The final game was against a good team that definitely provided a challenge though. It was very close the entire second half, and then we won ... by one. Whew! Undefeated!

I made two videos ... the first of the first few games (there were four, but Colton missed one, so it's really only clips from three games), and then the final three games. The first four games were played at Gene Fullmer, but they switched the kids back to a half-court (instead of the full court like during the summer). The final games were played at Taylorsville Rec and SoJoMiddle School ... those were all 8:00 games. So much for my Saturday sleep in.

Colton - Summer 2015

Summer season ... Colton had pretty much the same team as Spring (we lost one kid, gained two new ones). They would practice on Monday nights, and with our Gene Fullmer summer passes, the siblings would usually go too. Games were on Saturdays. This time, they were playing the full court at Gene Fullmer, which meant more running!

The boys did learn to play together well as a team this season. It was fun to see the passing and the plays. Alas, several of the boys will be in 5th grade come Fall, so that moves them up in the league, so the team will be splitting up some for the future.

Colton - Spring Basketball 2015

In the Winter, the little boys play Junior Jazz  basketball. As Spring rolls around, there are so many other options (soccer, football, baseball), but this year Colton was eligible to continue on in basketball (Gene Fullmer offers a rec league starting in  3rd grade). He swayed between soccer and basketball for a bit, then decided on basketball. I'll admit, as a parent spectator ... I do prefer the basketball (no weather worries, easier parking, no urge to jump into the game). I was especially pleased when I found out the games would be held at Gene Fullmer. They have a track above the court, and I love to jog while I watch. Except that I also like to get video of the games. Originally, the 14-year old agreed to be the videographer, but after the first couple games (in which he did fine, but missed some shots) his interest waned. I ended up manning the video camera instead of jogging for the remaining games ... but I was especially glad I did for THIS game (see highlights below). Colton was on FIRE ...

While I usually make a video for every game with the older boys, I generally don't get enough footage with the younger kids from a single game (that one above was the exception!). Usually I just wait until the end of the season and make one video, featuring all the highlights. I also did that, with the remaining games, you can see it HERE. 

No official team picture with Spring season (which is fine with me!) We didn't know anyone going into the season ... only one of the boys goes to Colton's same elementary school. Callahan -Spring 2015

The official basketball season may be over ... but there is still basketball. Callahan's age group is now considered "Junior Varsity" and in playing in a Spring League and a Spring Tournament, both with a majority of the games at Copper Hills High School. It's great that they are so nice and close, and the boys can run clocks to pay for a portion of the basketball fees.

Keaton - 8th Grade Year

I know they took team pictures ... I'll have to track it down. I missed the end of the year banquet, but I did make it to almost all of Keaton's games. There were quite a few new kids, I was learning names at the start, but got to know all the boys by the end of the season. 

On this team ... James, Rowland, Tyler and Koby (all whom Keaton had played with before) then there was Bradley, Nathan, Brenner and Dawson.  Brian Allfrey was coach. They played in two leagues. A Wednesday superleague, and then the Bantam league on Saturdays. 

While I videoed all the games, I didn't make highlight reels of all the games. It just takes time to go through all the clips (Keaton isn't inclined to help out here), make the muvee, etc. Any losses ... well, they just aren't nearly as fun to relive, even though often there are still great highlights! I didn't even get to all the wins ... but there are six games of fun highlights to watch and remember this season.

Keaton - Up with the 9th Graders

During Keaton's 8th grade year, he not only played basketball with the Copper Hills Prep league, but also with the West Hills school team. The official team is all 9th graders, but then Coach Heagren taps a few younger players to come practice with the team, and augment it for the Thursday night league (when the boys split into two teams to allow for more playing time). 

There were many practices after school, and early on Friday mornings. Games were Thursday nights ... the same night as my Zumba class. I didn't make it to that many games, especially after Keaton's buddy Tyler joined the team and his parents were always willing to give Keaton a ride. So ... not much video footage. You can see a small clip (HERE) ... and Keaton did score as I had my camera out!

Keaton went to watch almost all the Saturday games the 9th graders played in the official district league. Always there, cheering them on (he didn't even come to Callahan's games as often when Cal was on the team last year!) They were able to win the tournament, and the BIG trophy! Even though Keaton didn't play in the Saturday games, he still got a t-shirt with the rest of the team.

Good luck to these guys as they try out for the sophomore team next year. I know Keaton sure had a good time getting to know them and having the opportunity to play along side them this year.
